Escalator safety

Courtesy of NYC Department of Buildings. The majority of escalator accidents are due to improper conduct or rider error. Make sure employees know how to ride properly.

  • Before getting on, make sure that anything that could be caught is tucked in — for example, shoelaces and scarves.
  • Step on and off with care, especially if you wear bifocals.
  • Always stand facing forward.
  • Hold on to the handrails and avoid the sides under the rails.
  • Carefully watch any children that are with you.
  • Hold packages, pocketbooks, briefcases and backpacks securely.
  • Move quickly away from the exit areas.
  • Do not run, jump or go back backwards on the escalator.
  • Escalators are designed to move people. Do not place strollers, walkers or carts on the escalator.
